"We Don't Need The Mistletoe" by shinchansgirl
Fandom: Gundam Wing
Pairings: Heero/Hilde
Rating: PG
NOTE: I haven't worked with Hilde very much, so her characterization may be a little off. Please forgive me.
Also, I'm sorry that this took so long to get out. I was having a hard time coming up with ideas, considering how little I've worked with Hilde. Also, forgive me for leaving out Dorothy - I didn't notice until after I wrote it, and didn't feel like adding it in.
I've also taken the liberty of adding a few mentions of other pairings. You'll see 3x4, 6x9, 1x2 (if you don't read to the end), 6x9x1 (mentioned, but does not take place), Rx1 (same as previous), as well as the requested 1xH.
After all his years spent in training - both with Odin and with J - and then the wars along with his hard-won mental detachment from emotion, Christmastime was not something that Heero Yuy found himself understanding very well.
Being the good little soldier that he was, he immediately sought to rectify this problem when Duo - his one-time partner and fellow ex-Gundam pilot - began to plan a reunion Christmas party. He had done all the necessary research, learning about the different types of trees, both artificial and real, the symbolism, the 'birthday', the decorations...he had even done some research into the mythical man known as 'Santa Clause.'
None of that really prepared him for the admittedly small party.
All of the former Gundam pilots had managed to arrive on time - Quatre staying far away from the kitchen, per Duo's request - as well as Catherine, Noin, Hilde, Une, Sally...and was that Relena? Yes, even the former Queen of the World had managed to make an appearance. There were red and green decorations everywhere, set off by the occasional burst of blue, gold, and silver to lighten the atmosphere. The tree was decorated with tinsel, and surrounded by candles both on the floor, tables, and ledges surrounding it. Hanging over nearly every doorway was a sprig of mistletoe - something that he had yet to understand the significance of. Yes, he knew that when you stood underneath it with another person, the two of them were supposed to kiss, but really...how did that relate to a supposed deity being born on Earth?
"Watch where you stand Heero!" Duo called out, slipping by the former Wing pilot and kissing him lightly on the cheek as he passed. "You're under the mistletoe!"
Heero glared upwards, spotting the small plant immediately. Unconcerned with the fact that he had just been kissed by the man he considered to be his best friend - albeit, a rather eccentric one - Heero moved away from the offensive decoration.
Hilde, who had been standing near him, giggled as she took his arm. "Don't be such a sourpuss," she scolded lightly. "There must be someone here you wouldn't mind kissing."
Not thinking anything of the comment, Heero replied as if she had asked a question, as training demanded - she was, after all, an ally. "You are the only suitable female in the room at the moment."
Hilde blinked. "Excuse me?"
"Catherine I don't know very well, but considers herself to be Trowa's sister and knows how to throw knives with deadly precision; kissing her could be dangerous. Noin is involved with Marquise, and, should I attempt to kiss her, I would find myself either involved with the both of them or attempting to escape from the both of them. Sally is my doctor, and would likely consider myself to be ill and try to give me an unnecessary examination, and Une is now my superior officer. Relena is still looking for some sort of relationship with me, and would read deeper into such an action than is intended. You are the only female that I do not work with that I believe would not attempt to threaten my life."
After Heero's rather long explanation, Hilde asked: "And what about the guys?"
Heero blinked. "What about them? I have heard that a relationship between two males is not unusual for some cultures, but I believe that both Barton and Winner are already involved. Wufei was not raised to accept such a relationship in concerns to himself, and Duo, while open, prefers the company of females."
Hilde smirked. "Well then, I'm going to take that as a compliment and ask you to lead me to the mistletoe."
"Why?"
"So we can kiss, dummy. Or did you think that your long-winded explanation would keep you from sleeping on the couch tonight if you avoided it?"
Heero merely smiled and bent down to kiss the girl on his arm. He was the perfect soldier, after all.
He didn't need any mistletoe.
THE END.
